TID Reprimanded For Ridiculing Court

The Colombo Additional Magistrate Gihan Ranawaka has called for a full report on the arbitrarily arrest of Major Sunil de Silva who had been granted anticipatory bail. The Magistrate blamed the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) for not adhering to the court order and sternly ordered the OIC of the Division to be summoned to court next week. The Magistrate made this order considering an application made by a group of lawyers representing Maj. Sunil de Silva.

The Counsel for Maj. Silva submitted that the retired Major was a supporter of General Sarath Fonseka during the Presidential Election and in fear that the TID would arrest him; he had filed for an anticipatory bail application and obtained the bail from court. The Court while granting bail to Major de Silva had ordered the TID not to arrest him on whatever cause. However the TID, without adhering to the court order had arrested the Major without the knowledge of the court.

The counsels pointed out that by arresting their client who was on anticipatory bail the TID has ridiculed the order given by Court. After hearing to the submissions of the Counsel Magistrate ordered the OIC of the TID to be present before court on March 25.
