New BOI enterprises initiate investments in Maritime Training and Software development
The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka granted investment approval for three projects including an agreement with Wallem Lanka (Private) Limited to set up a Training Institute for the international shipping industry. Mr. Dhammika Perera, Chairman / Director General signed the agreements and formally presented the BOI Certificate of Registrations to the investors.
The Wallem Group provides clients with ship management, shipping agency, ship broking and IT services. Headquartered in Hong Kong, the company is committed to provide excellent services to clients worldwide. Wallem Lanka is a joint venture between Wallem Company Limited, Hong Kong and Dev Engineering Limited, Sri Lanka. The venture is an initial investment of US $ 100,000 that creates employment opportunities for 20.
The institute will provide training to Ship Officers and Crew. The venture will also supply competent sea staff to the shipping industry. Mr. Himanthe Dewendre, Managing Director of Wallem Lanka stated that “Wallem Company is the world’s oldest ship technical management company with a history of over 100 years.” Wallem currently manages over 350 ships worldwide. It manages over 7000 sea staff worldwide and operates 60 offices in 60 countries, said Mr. Dewendre. Mr. Prassana Rajaratna (Director) and Mr. Lakshman Rupasighe were also present at the occasion
The BOI also signed agreements for the following projects.
- N. J. Marine (Private) Limited signed an agreement to undertake deep sea fishing and processing of fish for the export market. The venture is an investment of US $ 640,000 that provides employment for 40 locals. The project will be carried out at the Negombo Fishery Harbour and is expected to commence operations in 3 months. Mr. W.A.W Cooray (Director) and Ms. Nishara Hiruni Cooray (Director) signed the agreement on behalf of N. J. Marine Limited
- Geveo Australasia (Private) Limited also signed an agreement to develop software for foreign clients. The venture sponsored by Geveo Australasia, Australia is an investment of US $ 450,000 that provides employment for 20 IT professionals. The project located at Colombo is expected to commence operations immediately. Air Commodore Ajith Jayasekera signed the agreement on behalf of the Directors Mr. Ravindra Weerasooriya and Mr. Christopher Leahey
